In a significant move ahead of the upcoming national polls, two high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance emerges in the aftermath of widespread and fatal youth-led protests that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the ouster of the incumbent government.
A Pledge to Address Young People's Concerns
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially pledged to focus on the issues raised by the new generation. This commitment follows the turbulent anti-corruption unrest that occurred in September, which led to considerable casualties.
"Agreement should not be what a leader wants, it should be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane following the deal was signed.
The late summer uprising was sparked by widespread frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a spark for underlying discontent stemming from a long period of slow growth and persistent accusations of deep-rooted graft in politics.
Details of the New Political Partnership
According to the formal pact, the positions for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling broad public dissatisfaction with the country's older political leadership. He has in the past served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key player in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He played a role in forming the caretaker government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.
Broader Government Discussions Taking Place
In a related development, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend held meetings with a number of leading political leaders. These discussions involved ex- prime ministers and the heads of rival mainstream parties, marking the initial such gathering since the time of the uprising.
Following these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that conducting a credible election is a shared responsibility. The statement reiterated the government's dedication to guaranteeing a secure and fear-free environment for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
