Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in implementing replay technology.
Video review systems will make its debut at The Championships for the 2025 edition.
Players will gain the option to challenge certain decisions made by the official, mirroring the protocol currently in operation at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.
This innovation will be operational on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles matches.
This step arrives only a season following the All England Club implemented ELC, which effectively ended the longstanding tradition of line judges.
Scope of Challenges
Competitors cannot to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the umpire to re-examine other situations, such as:
- Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
- If a ball touched an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
- Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a point.
Importantly, there will be no cap on the number of challenges a player can ask for.
Case in Point
A recent case occurred in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against Jack Draper.
The British player admitted it was a tough call for the umpire, but believed his rival had "used the regulations quite well."
The umpire viewed a replay and determined the player was responsible for interference, granting the rally to Medvedev.
Growing Trend
Video reviews are not exclusive to major tournaments. The system was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.
Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews in place at all of its tournaments.
Additional Innovations
Another innovation at Wimbledon 2025 involves the introduction of graphical cues on displays to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.
This solves situations where fans have occasionally been uncertain whether a shot was out or in.
In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have also announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
